William H. Dwyer, Jr. entered into eternal rest on October 3, 2023.
Bill was born on October 18, 1932, to the late William and Anna Cullen Dwyer and was a lifelong area resident. He attended Fairfield Prep as well as Bullard Havens. He served in U.S. Army from 1953 – 1955 having the distinction of serving in the 3rd Infantry Division known as The Old Guard. A proud patriot, he would humbly speak, never bragging, about his service.
He was a talented bricklayer working for the James E. Dwyer Construction Company building many of the buildings in the Fairfield County area; most, if not all, are still standing today. He was employed by the Stratford Board of Education from 1971- 2005 as the beloved custodian with the big Irish smile with kindness and patience at Harry B. Flood Middle School making numerous friends with the students over the years. He was an active swimmer, swimming most of his life "throwing in the towel" at the age of 88.
His leisure time was spent as an active member of The Spirit of Black Rock Fife and Drum for many years serving as the Drum Major as well as Landcraft Fife and Drum in North Haven also spending family time in Cape Cod.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Evelyn and his beloved daughter Sharon Dwyer Varga and his brother Paul Dwyer. He is survived by his daughters Kathleen Dwyer Pough and Janet Dwyer. Grandchildren Michael (Vanessa) and Daniel (Jessica) Varga and Zachary Pough (Gianna), great grandson Rolan Varga, brothers Jack, Jim & Robert Dwyer, a son-in-law, Steven Varga, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Bishop Wicke for their kindness, compassion and care our father during this time especially Jane and the rest of the nursing staff.
Friends may greet his family Monday, October 9th from 4-7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford.
Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 10:15 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church, Stratford. Interment with full military honors in St. John's Cemetery, Stratford.
