Very Reverend Protopresbyter Stephen Shutack, PhD died June 6, 2008 in Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Nesquehoning, Pa. in 1927, Father Shutack graduated from the University of Scranton with a B.A. He earned a Masters degree from Villanova University and a Doctorate in Slavic Languages and Literature from Columbia University. His theological studies were at St. Vladimir's Seminary in New York City. Father Shutack was ordained to the priesthood in New York City in 1951 by the Most Reverend Orestes P. Chornock. In 1966, Bishop Orestes elevated him to the rank of Monsignor or Archpriest. Father Stephen served Holy Ghost Orthodox Church in Phoenixville, PA for 24 years, and in 1969 he built a beautiful church edifice there. His most recent pastorate was at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, Silver Lane, Stratford, CT where he served for 23 years. He also taught the Russian language and Russian history at The Hill School in Pottstown, PA for 21 years. He is survived by his wife Pani Helen Shutack, his daughter Justine and her husband Captain Dean Bradford of Phoenixville, PA and their two children Elizabeth and Steven, his son Victor and his wife Leslie Shutack of Valley Forge, PA and their two children Claire Skye and Callum, and his sister Marie and her husband Nat Lucas and their son Nat Jr. of Jim Thorpe, PA. His body will lie in state from 6 to 9 pm on Monday, June 9 in St. John the Baptist Church. Funeral Service of a priest will be held at 6:30 pm. A Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be held Tuesday, June 10 at 9:00 am. Internment will be in Sky-View Memorial Park in Hometown, PA on Wednesday at 11:30 am. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made the St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 600 Silver Lane, Stratford, CT.
