– Vera Sakovich Markitan, age 92, passed away on Wednesday February 14, 2007 at the Jewish Home in Fairfield, where she resided for the past 15 months. Prior to that Vera lived at the Seymour Hollander Apartments on Park Avenue, Bridgeport from 1982 until November 2005. Born on December 1, 1914 in New Haven to the late Anton and Irene Sakovich. She was the widow of Michael H. Markitan whom she married on September 5, 1942 in New Haven. She is survived by 2 daughters Renee Markitan of Stratford and Vera Fernandes of Peoria, IL, 2 grandchildren, Michael Fernandes of Peoria, IL and Cheryl Fernandes of Milford, 2 great-grandchildren Haley and Cody, a half sister Sonya Brodrick of Georgia and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by four sisters, two brothers and a half brother. Early in her life, Vera worked at Chance-Vought, before marrying her sweetheart, Michael, who she met through the Russian Church. She later became a homemaker, a domestic and a grinder for Pratt Whitney. She enjoyed bingo and attending the theatre with friends. In 1983 she went to Russia on a church Pilgrimage. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday February 22nd at 9:15 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford and at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church Stratford for a Requiem Funeral Service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery New Haven. Friends may call on Monday from 4-7 p.m. Panachida at 6 p.m. on Monday.
