Obituary

Sandy J. Hovan of Stratford, CT., daughter of the late Antoni and Zofia Malyszka and widow of the late Andrew P. Hovan, passed away on Thursday December 29th 2011 in Bridgeport Hospital. Sandy was born on June 2, 1922. Her late husband, Andrew was a former US Marine, retired Stratford Police Detective and former player for the NY Giants Organization. Sandy was initially employed by Columbia Records and Thermostat Corporation earlier in her career. Sandy and her husband, Andy, were both employed at a later date by Mercer Fuel Company, where Sandy was affiliated with the accounting office for many years. Sandy assisted her brother, Dr. Francis Malyszka, in his medical practice during the incipient stages of his career. Sandy's most precious possessions were her unrelenting faith in God and faithful devotion to family. Sandy especially loved children – children everywhere. They loved her right back. Visits by Sandy's children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were especially meaningful to Sandy, after she suffered a life changing stroke in March 2007.Sandy is survived by her daughter Karen L. Hovan Stanziale and her husband Sean of Stratford and her son, Andrew P. Hovan and his wife, Karen Fertelmes Hovan of Stratford. She is also survived by five grandchildren. In order of birth they are, Karlen Stanziale Shupp and her husband Peter of Oxford, Karey Stanziale of Stratford, Kory Stanziale Buswell and her husband Michael of Trumbull, Jennifer Hovan of NJ and Brendan Hovan of Stratford. Sandy is also survived by her six great grandchildren. In order of birth, Tyler Sean Stanziale, Jaden Kenneth Shupp, Tanner Andrew Shupp, Jordan Thomas Stanziale, Gavin Peter Shupp and finally her first great granddaughter, Ava Grace Buswell. In her immediate family, Sandy was predeceased by two infant brothers, her sister Josephine, who died at age 12 and sisters Agnes Matyszewski, Janet Wojcicki and brother Frank Malyska. Also, nephews Ned and Gerald Bachinskas, Frank Malyska, Jr., numerous in- laws and cousins were predeceased. Sandy is survived by nieces and nephews. They are Dr. Stan Matyszewski and his wife Maureen of Cheshire, Marleen and Dr. John Babiec of PA, , Roberta Belton and her husband Art of CA, Ed Wojcicki of NY and Fran Edgerton and her husband Bob of FL, Barbara Packer and husband Robert of Trumbull, Ron Malyska and his wife Rose of Monroe, Robert Malyska and wife Tara of TX, George Hovan and his wife Gail of MA, Tom Hovan and his wife Gloria of MI and Bob Hovan and his wife, Debbie of MA, Jack Potasky of FL. Sandy is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Balint Malyska. Special thanks to Dr. Lisa Webb and Dr. Alan Nelson, Southwest Agency on the Aging, Kim Fereletto and Christine Kestenbaum, Amedysis, Respite Care from Companions and Homemakers, Disability Resource of Stratford ,Vitas and Stratford Health Department. Amedysis caregiver Diane Thomas, nurse Diane and respite caregiver, April Crumpton. We are especially thankful to the Kavanaughs and Bev Benedetto, who in their ministry administered communion to Sandy on a weekly basis. It takes a village to care for a stroke victim. Special thanks to her 24/7 caregivers Rashida K. and Desmine Davis, both were devoted to Sandy, as she lived in her own home for the remainder of her bountiful life. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 in the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Pl. Stratford and 10:00 in St. Mark Roman Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial with Father Don Guglielmi officiating. Interment will follow in St. Johns Cemetery Stratford.Friends and family may call on Tuesday from 4 – 7 pm. Contributions in Sandy's name may be made to St. Mark Church, Stratford, CT 06614.
