Sandra Joyce
Pleban
January 12, 1941 – March 19, 2024
Sandra Joyce Pleban, 83, a longtime resident of Huntington, entered into peaceful rest on March 19, 2024, at her home. She was the beloved wife of fifty-one years to the late surgeon Walter E. Pleban, M.D. She was the daughter of the late George Kaminsky and niece of the late John and Anne Kober.
Sandy was born on January 12, 1941, in Bridgeport, CT. She was a graduate of Stratford High School and later the Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing, earning her R.N in 1962. She was a parishioner and church officer of St. John's Carpatho Russian Orthodox Church of Silver Lane, Stratford, where she was a member of their renowned "Pierogi Palace" and bingo staff. She donated her time to a variety of community organizations, serving as a President of the Mohegan School PTO, President of the Shelton High School Band Parents, President of the Shelton Junior Women's Club, as well as a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a lifelong New York Yankees fan as well as a Fairfield Stags supporter, and a talented bowler who also played tennis. She enjoyed vacationing with family on the shores of Maine and fishing with friends on Lake Champlain. Those in her wide circle reveled in her remarkable cooking and baking skills, and the Fourth of July and New Years Eve parties she hosted were legendary. She cherished each and every one of her feline companions throughout her life, including her faithful cat who never left her side, Snickers.
To Sandy, her loving family meant everything, and she was a devoted mother, aunt, and grandmother. She is survived by her three children; daughter, Dr. Lisa Pleban and daughter-in-law, Sue Ward of Wilton, NY, daughter, Wendy Grabarz and son-in-law, Robert Grabarz of Shelton, CT, and son, Joel Pleban and daughter-in-law, Dr. Katherine Bothos-Pleban of Stratford, CT; brother, George Kaminsky and his wife Helen of Greenville, SC, sister, Sharon Lawruszko of Stratford, and cousin, Joyce Cayer and her husband Jules of Shelton. She is also survived by her three loving grandchildren, whom she was extremely proud of; Kristen Grabarz-Carlson, Stephen Grabarz, and David Pleban; nieces and nephews, Frank Pleban, John Pleban, Joe Pleban, Mark Lawruszko, Michelle Tartaglio, Michael Kaminsky, Sonya Colburn, Jeff Cayer, and Josh Cayer. Sandy's family also extends their great appreciation for compassionate service provided by her devoted caregivers, Margaret Pinhiero, Andrea Cameron, and Donna Benjamin. Gratitude is also provided to the professionals from the Connecticut Hospice for their care.
Calling hours will be held Friday, March 22, 2024, from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. Panachida at 4:45 p.m. A Requiem Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday, March 23rd at 10 a.m. meeting directly at The Carpatho- Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist 364 Mill Hill Avenue Bridgeport. Interment will follow in St. John's Cemetery, Monroe. The generosity that Sandy displayed throughout her life can be remembered through a memorial contribution to The Connecticut Burn Care Foundation. www.ctburnsfoundation.org
