Obituary

Rudolph Girolamo Mastroianni, age 80, of Stratford, died suddenly on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at his home. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 49 years, Barbara. Born in Bridgeport on September 27, 1931 to the late Domenico and Margaret Mastroianni, Rudy had been a Stratford resident for 46 years. A proud veteran, Rudy served in the Air Force as a Radar Technician from 1951-1955. After earning an Electrical Engineering degree, Rudy was able to continue serving his country by working for the defense industry as a Radar Research Engineer at Norden Systems until his retirement in 1989. He was involved in developing state of the art radar systems, of which some concepts are now used in military radars and in commercial aircraft. Rudy was a devoted Catholic who was honored with the Saint Augustine Medal for his service to St. Mark's Parish in Stratford in 2008. He taught religious education for 10 years, served as head usher and devoted one hour each week to Eucharistic Adoration. Rudy was a member of the International Order of Alhambra, an organization of Catholic men dedicated to providing assistance for developmentally disabled persons. He served as the local Benebad Caravan Grand Commander, Deputy Regional Director and Regional Director for Connecticut. He was elected to the national board as Supreme Captain of the Body Guard in 1989 and 1991 and Supreme Scribe in 1993. Rudy also served as Chair for the Alhambra House Committee, editor of the Annual Directory and Chair of the Website Committee. He also volunteered as a coordinator and instructor for the AARP's Driver Safety Program. Rudy was the current president of the Stratford Historical Society. He enjoyed giving tours as a docent and took great joy in sharing his knowledge with children at the annual History Camp each summer. His interest in the past did not prevent him from embracing the future. He had a lifelong love of technology, especially computers and cameras, and was always willing to help his friends with their computer problems. Rudy was a man of faith, integrity and humility who will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving daughters, Mary Therien and her husband Harold of Stratford, and Anne Mastroianni and her husband Randall Dieckman of Newtown. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Lauren and Jennifer Therien and Natalie and Benjamin Dieckman. He was predeceased by his sister Jennie DeLuca and survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, many longtime friends and neighbors and his special friend Frances Pettinella. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 25th at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford. Interment with full military honors will be in St. John's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. Donations may be made in Rudy's honor to St. Mark's Church, 500 Wigwam Lane, Stratford, CT or to the Stratford VNA, Ryder's Landing, Stratford, CT.
