Robert L. "POP" Newall, age 92, of Stratford, beloved husband of Patricia Pelletier Newall, passed away on June 15, 2022, peacefully in his home.
Bob was born in Bridgeport on July 26, 1929, to the late Francis and Frances (Lockwood) Newall and had been a lifelong area resident. He was a graduate of Harding High School class of 1947 where he lettered in football and track, running the 100- and 200-yard events, and finishing second in the state his senior year. He received his bachelor's degree, master's degree, and Sixth Year Certificate all from Fairfield University where he eventually met the love of his life.
Bob was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He earned a rank of commander in the American Legion, Post 42, that led to his long-term membership with the CT Yankee Drum Corp. He was a retired teacher with many accomplishments that included at the very least, 34 years as varsity head swim coach and 21 years as head coach of boy's track at Stratford High School. He was inducted to the Stratford Hall of Fame in November 2002. Pop had a passion for sports and was a beloved coach to many that included a variation of other sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. He was a head coach for Fairfield University Swimming, an assistant coach for the Stratford Jets and Eagles. Pop spent 20 + years coaching, with his son Jerry, The Stratford Sooners softball team with most of the roster being Newall boys.
Pop was a member of several associations: The VFW, The Catholic War Vets, The German Club, and The Stratford Old Timers Athletic Association, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2011. His 39 years of officiating football led to his role as former president of the Fairfield County Football Officials Association, and Hall of Fame inductee in 2012. Pop was a longtime volunteer for the Special Olympics. Robert Newall was an extremely hard-working man with an avid love for his family, UConn Women's Basketball, The Stratford Brakettes, The N.Y. Mets, and the N.Y. Giants. Robert/Bob/Pop/Pop-Pop/ Coach / Mr. Newall, however you knew him, made a positive influence on many lives, many of which he would forever speak of, and would still know by name. You will always be cherished and never forgotten. Thank you for everything!! We love you and may you rest in Peace!
Survivors in addition to his beloved wife Patricia of 66 years, include his devoted children, Dave Newall and his wife Lucy of Stratford, Jerry Newall of Milford, Kevin Newall, Pam Archibald and her husband Mike, Missy Claxton and her husband Charlie, and Terry Newall all of Stratford. 15 cherished grandchildren, Kayla, Alexa, and Tyler Newall, Kyle (Lauren) Kalemba, Jessica (Jeff) Kochiss, Todd (Shauna) Newall, Jill (Zack) Thomas, Samantha and Nicole Archibald, Jade Claxton, Brian (Jamie) Newall, Rachel Newall, Ryane, Jared and Joshua Newall, 7 great-grandchildren, Ella, Cade, Clare, Reid, Avery, Casen, and Emerson, a sister, Barbara Guenette and her husband Leroy, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his son, Brian and his wife Theresa, his daughter-in-law, Karen, and his sister, Anne Marie Butterworth and her husband Bill.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 21st at 9:00 a.m. meeting directly at St. Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford. Interment with full military honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull.
The Adzima Funeral Home- Stratford has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
