Robert Gerwien, Sr., age 72, of Stratford passed away on Sunday, November 4th, 2012. Robert was born in Bridgeport, son of the late Catherine McCarthy Gerwien, and Edwin Francis Gerwien. He was the beloved father of Robert W. Gerwien, Jr., Ph.D (Alicea) and proud grandfather of Sean Xavier and Dannan Juliette. Robert is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Spillane (Emmett), twin brother, Edwin (Jane) and sister, Patricia Panda (Dr. Raymond). Bob was a member of the first graduating class of St. James School, Stratford, and the Fairfield Prep class of 1958. He also attended Fairfield University. Bob worked in the food service industry most of his life. In his later years he volunteered at the Open Door Shelter in Norwalk where his compassionate regard for the clients will long be remembered. Among those who mourn his passing are Rosemarie Rhodes (David), mother of his son, Robert, Jr., long time friend, Mary Beth Nevins, many cherished nieces, nephews and Gerwien and McCarthy cousins. The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the outstanding and compassionate care Bob received at Norwalk Hospital. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 14th at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Church 2070 Main Street Stratford. Interment will be private. At the family's request calling hours have been omitted. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford.
