IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Ralph H.
Meyers
December 11, 1924 – November 29, 2021
Ralph H. Meyers, 96, died unexpectedly on November 29, 2021 at the Bridgeport Hospital with his youngest daughter by his side.
Ralph was born at the family home on 306 South Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut on December 11, 1924, the youngest child of the late Jacob Henry Meyers and Mary Ethel (Mihlan) Meyers. He grew up in the South End of Bridgeport, attended Roosevelt Grammar School and graduated from Central High School in 1942. Ralph attended Yale University for two years then left to join the United States Navy during World War II serving on the USS Bremerton.
When the war ended, Ralph returned to Bridgeport and began working for Sikorsky Aircraft, remaining at that company for the next forty years, working at various jobs, traveling overseas to China and Pakistan, and having numerous adventures. He graduated the University of Bridgeport with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1964.
On September 20, 1947, Ralph married Wanda Pauline Zyla. After living briefly in Bridgeport and Devon, they moved to Stratford and remained Stratford residents for the rest of their lives. They raised two daughters in a tightly knit Beers Place neighborhood and developed lifelong friendships. Ralph was a devoted husband, in later life taking full responsibility for the care of his wife as she struggled with the effects of Parkinson's Disease. He loved his two daughters and was a supportive presence in their lives.
Ralph loved spending time in Maine, having pizza with his nieces, traveling, working with wood, and watching old black and white movies and musicals – especially 'Fiddler on the Roof". In his last years he became increasingly concerned about the environmental degradation around the Housatonic River basin. He spent countless hours advocating for the cleanup of the toxic waste surrounding the old Avco facility and fighting government bureaucracy.
Ralph is survived by his two daughters, Mary Jane (Hal) Doughty of Pittston, ME and JoAnne Meyers of Westford, MA; three grandchildren, Robert Doughty and wife Sadaf, Jillian Gill and Jacob Gill; special nephew Raymond L. Meyers; special nieces Joyce (William) Tigano and Carol (Kevin) Dake; and two special friends, lifelong friend, Gus Karazulas who Ralph met in 1932, and Walter Smith of Seguin, Texas, friends for 16 years. He was predeceased by his wife, parents, sister Grace and her husband Willis King; two brothers Edward Clarence Meyers and his wife Rosario and Raymond J Meyers and his wife Geraldine, his niece Barbara A Georgette and his great-nephew Scott C. Meyers.
In honor of Ralph, fight for what you believe, take care of a loved one or take a child fishing. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Habitat for Humanity.
