Peter Gernat, age 90, of Bridgeport, beloved husband of the late Ornella Moretti Gernat, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016 in Ludlow Health Center, Fairfield. Peter, a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army was born in Bridgeport to the late Vasil and Mary (Kepchar) Gernat and has been a life long area resident. He was a graduate of Harding High School, and served his county as a Military Policeman during WW II. Peter was a retired Sergeant for the Bridgeport Police Department, with twenty-eight years of service. Following his retirement; he served for the next twenty years as a Union Negotiator for the AFLCIO- Police Union. He was an avid New York Yankee fan, and loved to sing especially God Bless America. Peter was also very proud that he was fluent in 3 languages, English, Slavonic and Italian. Survivors include his devoted daughters, Linda Lia Couton and her husband Bill of Stratford, and Gina Santoro and her husband Frank of Oxford, 5 cherished grandchildren, Mario, Carla and John Lia, and Noelle and Elena Santoro,step-grandson, Graig Couton, 2 nieces, Kathye Robles and Nancee Popic, his good friend and neighbor, Marie Poppa. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Peter was pre-deceased by his sister, Helen Popic. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, February 2nd at 9:15 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford, and at 10 a.m. in the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist, Bridgeport for a Requiem Funeral Service. Interment with full military honors will be in St. John's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends ay call on Monday from 4-8 p.m.
