Nicholas G. Vancho, age 87, of Trumbull, the beloved husband and high school sweetheart of Joan Howesco Vancho, passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2021, in his home surrounded by family.
Nick was born in Bridgeport on May 20, 1934, to the late Nicholas and Rose (Chatlos) Vancho and has been a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Harding High School, class of 1952, where he starred in basketball (All-State 1951 and 1952; All-New England 1952) and baseball. He set a then New England single-game scoring record with 37 points against Hillhouse in 1952 in the New England semi-finals at the Boston Garden. He attended Rollins College in Florida where he continued playing baseball, appearing in the 1954 College World Series and being named a second-team All-American at shortstop.
He went on to play Class A ball in 1956 (Milwaukee Braves) in the Nebraska League. He was inducted into the Rollins College Hall of Fame in 1978. He received the Perry Pilotti Memorial Outstanding Athlete Award from the Oldtimers Athletic Association of Greater Bridgeport and he later served as President of the Association. After his baseball career, Nick worked as a Contract Director for Perkin-Elmer until his retirement.
Survivors, in addition to his beloved wife, include his devoted children, Marianne Olenoski and her husband David, Nicholas J. Vancho and his wife Jonlynn, Roseanne Vancho, and Robert Vancho, his loving grandchildren, Jamie (Dana) Fiatarone, Lori (Patrick) Cleary, David (Erin) and Christopher (Kimberly) Olenoski, Tanhya (Richard) Schimel, Nicholas and Jason Vancho, Savannah and Sydney Snow, Tyler and Dylan Vancho, his 13 cherished great-grandchildren, a brother James Vancho and several nieces and nephew. In addition to his parents, Nick was predeceased by a sister, Mary Spadolino.
Friends and family may visit on Monday, January 10, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. Masks are required, as visitors walk through, pay their respects, and exit without lingering to ensure all guests can come through the building.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 11th at 10:00 a.m. meeting directly at St. Stephen's Church 6948 Main St, Trumbull (masks are required) Entombment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery St Catherine of Sienna Mausoleum.
