Merton H. Bennett, 82, of Stratford, husband of Gloria G. Bennett for 47 years, took his last breath and passed peacefully on October 25, 2010, in Bridgeport Hospital. Born in Milford on February 20, 1928, he was the son of the late John R. Bennett and Faith S. Bennett, and was also pre-deceased by a brother Goodrich Bennett. Merton was the definition of a father. A selfless, quiet, hardworking man, he spent all of his healthy life with the sole purpose of providing for his family. Merton labored 47 years for Sikorsky Aircraft, rising from the factory, to later a white collar position, where he almost always worked a six day, if not sometimes seven day work week. When he was a younger father, Merton would take a second job and work after midnight before returning to Sikorsky at 5:30 in the morning. In his later father life, Merton would walk to his job, 11 miles away, so his son could take his car to college, and sometimes it was pouring rain. An unassuming man, who bought himself very little, quietly but surely, made his family understand they were his number one priority through his sacrifices. Merton did have two pleasures, his cup of coffee and newspaper on the weekends, and the beloved family dog Trento. In addition to his wife, he is survived by 2 sons John R. Bennett III of Stratford, and David J. Bennett and his wife Erika Hannon-Bennett of Milford. Deeply saddening, Merton was a first time grandfather to Beau Bennett, son of David and Erika, whom he never got to hold. Other survivors include brothers in law Richard and Joseph Galatie, and several nieces and nephews whose importance to his life was immeasurable. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday October 29, 2010 at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church Stratford. Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery Stratford. Friends may call on Thursday October 28th from 4-7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford.
