Obituary

Mary Kuchar Savoyski, formerly of Bridgeport, CT, died peacefully Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Brighton Gardens in Port St. Lucie, FL. Mary, 93, was born September 10, 1916 in Bridgeport, CT. She was the widow of John Savoyski and daughter of the late Paul and Christine Kuchar. Mary leaves a daughter, Sharon Savoyski Porto, with whom she resided in Florida and a son, Robert Savoyski of Minnesota: Besides her children she leaves two grandchildren Julie and Richard Savoyski; a sister Mildred Frissora of West Haven, CT and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Cecelia Cook and brother Stephen Kuchar. Mary was gentle, quiet and a charming woman who showed great strength throughout her life and had lots of wisdom to impart, but only upon those who asked. She married later in life than most women of her generation – not for lack of opportunity – finally saying, 'yes', to John Savoyski, the true love of her life. Together they enjoyed the day-to-day and had two beautiful children, but the couple's time together was cut short when John Savoyski died unexpectedly of a heart attack in his late 50's. In the face of that heartbreak and the uncertainty of what lie ahead in a time when single parenthood was uncommon, Mary Savoyski persevered. With two young children to raise, she got her driver's license at age 54 and went to work at Coastal Tool Company after many years as a stay-at-home Mom. Before having children she worked at Remington Arms in Bridgeport. After working a dozen years and raising her children who went on to become successful adults, Mary retired, enjoying many years off just doing the simple things in life such as shopping and visiting friends. Her last years were spent in comfort and luxury at the home of her daughter, Sharon, who was her mother's caretaker, advocate and dear friend. They shared many laughs, conversations and much to Mary Savoyski's delight, scrumptious food, much of it cooked by family friend Michael DiNello, a top professional chef. Even at 93, Mary read the newspaper and her favorite magazines, often informing her daughter of the latest headlines. Funeral services will take place on Thursday February 25, 2010 at 9:15 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford and at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Grace Church with a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery Stratford. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.
