Obituary

Lillian (Lee) Evelyn Erst was born March 27, 1923, to Dr. Floyd and Anna Turner in Staten Island, New York.  She passed from this life on October 11, 2021, at the age of 98.

Lee is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Erst, of Trumbull, Connecticut; a sister, Virginia Welton, of Orange, California; and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Steven Erst, and by a sister, Velma Robinson.

When Lee was 2, her father, Dr. Floyd Turner of the U.S. Immigration service, was assigned duty in Ireland; and Lee spent a three-year sojourn in the Emerald Isle, an experience she remembered very little of, as she was so young at the time of her stay.

In 1943, Lee enlisted in the US Marine Corps, prompted in part by a desire to see new places and in part by the promises of a dear friend's father, a ranking marine officer, to "take care of her."  However, she spent most of her two-year stint of duty shuffling papers in an office in Washington, D.C.

A major change in Lee's life came in 1947 when she attended a dance with friends in Trumbull, Connecticut.   There she met Steven Erst, and a relationship developed.  They were married in Trumbull 2 years later, a union that lasted, as noted above, until Steve died in January of 2014.  Their daughter, Kathleen (Kathy) was born in 1953.

Lee loved singing hymns and had fond memories of her mother's sitting at the family's piano playing and singing beloved hymns.  Family who visited in Lee's home were often invited to join her and Kathy in a few of their favorite hymns.   She loved the Lord, and as long as her health allowed was a faithful member of Calvary Evangelical Church in Trumbull, CT.

Some time back, Lee wrote a draft of her own obituary.  She concluded it with these words as her final wishes, "She would desire that people would do a kind deed for someone."
