Obituary

Lawrence E. Palaia, 83, of Stratford, beloved husband of Susan Ann Frouge Palaia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Born in Bridgeport on June 22, 1942, to Russell Palaia Sr. and Remigia Riccio Palaia, Larry was a lifelong area resident who carried deep pride in his roots and his community.

A graduate of Notre Dame High School and Fairfield University, Larry took over his family’s business, Remar Printing, where he became known for dependable, high-quality work. From Bridgeport Jai Alai and the Downtown Cabaret Theatre to local businesses, churches, and politicians, Larry was the printer everyone trusted.

After retiring from printing, he worked at the Connecticut Post before making a late-career change to become a certified sanitarian—a role he served in for Westport, Bethel, and ultimately the City of Bridgeport until his second retirement in 2016. He also served the Town of Stratford as a Connecticut State Representative and as a member of the Stratford Board of Education, where he played a key role in creating Flood Middle School.

Larry loved cooking, science and technology, helping neighbors, and tinkering in the yard. He was always prepared, inventive, and endlessly curious. One of his favorite simple pleasures was enjoying a good hot dog from The Windmill in Stratford—something that never failed to brighten his day. He will be remembered for his kindness, steady presence, and generous spirit.

He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Susan; his children Dawn (the late Carmen) Corica, Denise Sherwood (Schuyler), John Palaia, and Susan Basciano (Jack); his grandchildren Carmine Corica, Nicole Sherwood-Amico, Joseph Sherwood, Isabella, Michael, and Gabriella Basciano; his great-grandson Ryan Amico; and several nieces. He will also be dearly missed by his caregiver, Chef Dorothy, whose cooking brought him comfort and joy in his final days.

Larry was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Russell Palaia Jr.

Family and friends may greet the family on Wednesday, December 3rd, from 4–7 pm at Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Saint Vincent’s Heart and Vascular Institute.
