Joseph E. Keane age 80 of Shelton died peacefully on Tuesday May 26, 2009 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Margaret Kopcik Samoncik Keane and loving father of Evelyn and Brian Keane. Joseph was pre-deceased by his two sons James and Robert Keane. He was born in Bridgeport on March 19, 1929 to the late Margaret and Louis Keane. He is also survived by Margaret's children Linda and Edward Samoncik, his brother Louis Keane, his aunt Eileen Harrity, a special brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Patricia Kopchik, and other relatives and friends. Joseph graduated from Warren Harding High School in 1947 and the Progressive School of Photography in New Haven. Joseph served his country proudly with two years in the Army during the Cold War in Korea from 1947 until 1949, and then enlisted in the Air Force 604th squadron from 1951 to 1955. Joseph was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9460 in Stratford, also a member of Stratford EMS serving as an ambulance driver for five years. Joseph was a wonderful advocate for the mentally challenged community. He was nominated by Evelyn Kennedy to serve on the Board for Protection and Advocacy of the Mentally Challenged and served on various other committees for the cause. He was a member of the Ella Grasso Parents Group in Stratford, and VARCA/ George Hegyi Industries of Derby. Joseph retired from Norden Systems after 25 years of service as an Industrial Photographer. Photography was Joseph's passion and Joseph won many awards for his beautiful photographs. He was a member of the Norden Retirees Club until his illness prevented him from attending their great picnics at Sherwood Island, and in his younger life was a member of the Bridgeport Troopers Drum and Bugle Corp. Joseph also was a member of the St. Lawrence choir in the 1990's and showed his photographic skill taking pictures of the group at various functions. Family and friends may call on Thursday May 28th (TODAY) from 4-7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday May 29th at 10 a.m. in St. Lawrence Church in Huntington. Interment with full military honors will be in St. John's Cemetery Stratford. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make donations to the White Plains Group c/o Ella Grasso Center, The George Hegyi Industries (for the mentally challenged) or to Connecticut Hospice. The family also wishes to thank Connecticut Hospice and the staff of Griffin Hospital, as well as Hewitt Health & Rehab for their care and compassion. Also, a beautiful comfort shawl of many colors was given to Joseph in his final days from the Griffin Hospital Caring and Creativity Project which kept him wrapped in love and peace, it was Joseph's Coat of many colors, thank you from the family for the security it provided.
