John Pida, loving husband of Julia Pida of Trumbull, died peacefully Saturday. He was 90 years old. John emigrated to the United States in 1951. During World War II, he was driven by the Soviets from his boyhood village in the Carpathian Mountain region of Czechoslovakia. He entered Germany and lived in a displaced person camp for much of the war. Upon release from the camp, he boarded a ship for the United States, landing in New Haven. Settling in Bridgeport, John was immediately taken in by the congregation of St John's Byzantine Catholic Church and spent his life in service to the parish and priests and his beloved choir where he sang at every service for over 55 years. John worked at Sturm and Ruger Company for 35 years in Southport. In 1975, he and Julia opened Pida's German American Delicatessen in Monroe. John and Julia came out of retirement and owned the Aspetuck Blue Bird Inn in Easton from 1990 to 2000. In addition to his wife, John is survived by two daughters, Kathy Oravetz of Plano, Texas, and Rosemarie Krize of Monroe; two sons, Michael Pida and his wife Heather of Fairfield, and Thomas Pida and his wife Jennifer of Monroe. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and two great grand children along with two sisters and family in Czechoslovakia and Canada. The family wishes to thank the staff of Masonic Care in Newtown for their care and support. Funeral services will take place on Thursday October 13th at 9 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford and at 10 a.m. in St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church Nichols, for a Divine Liturgy with Office of Christian Burial. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery Stratford.
