April 28, 1933 – April 3, 2024
John Mellor, age 90, of Stratford, beloved husband of the late Ethel Gernat Mellor, passed away on April 3, 2024, in his home.
John was born in Guilford on April 28, 1933, to the late Raymond and Ruth (Fowks) Mellor and has been a longtime area resident. He was a graduate of Stratford High School, and earned his BS from the University of Connecticut, his MS from Tufts University, and his PhD from M.I.T. John was a retired chemistry professor, at Southern Connecticut State University and prior to that at the University of Bridgeport.
He was an avid Barbershop quartet singer for many years and was a member of the Coastal Mix Singers and Stratford Sister Cities Singing Group. John was very active with the Masonic Order, and was a member of America-St. John's No.8 A.F. & A.M., where he was Past master, past district deputy of first Masonic district, past High Priest of Baldwin Chapter No. 13 RAM, past Grand High Priest RAM of Connecticut, past Thrice Illustrious Master Jerusalem Chapter No. 16 R&SM, holder of the Knight of Ish Sodi from Grand Council R&SM of CT, past Commander Hamilton Commandery No. 5, Knight York Cross of Honor, past Governor Connecticut York Rite College #17, and a member of the valley of Bridgeport Scottish Rite. Also, he loved to play pinochle and bridge, read history books, and was an avid vegetable gardener. His favorite sport teams included the Red Sox, Mets, and UCONN basketball. He had a great sense of humor and loved running.
Survivors include his devoted children, Linda Bates and her husband Philip of Enfield, Susan Bard of Stratford and John Mellor and his wife Annete of Ansonia, 6 cherished grandchildren, Anthony and Michael Daglio, Danielle and Justin Bard, John and Jessica Mellor, and 2 great-grandchildren, Emma and James Daglio and a devoted family friend Laurie Birdseye & Patrick Early (walking buddy). In addition to his beloved wife of 67 years and parents, John was pre-deceased by his brothers, Richard and Raymond.
Friends may greet the family on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford, with a Masonic Ritual at 6:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10th in St Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford. Interment will follow in Putney Cemetery, Stratford.
