BLACK – Deacon Ian Francis Black of Trumbull was taken home to the Father Saturday July 29, 2006 after a long battle with leukemia. Ian was ordained a Roman Catholic Deacon with the Diocese of Bridgeport in 1998 and served at St. Jude parish in Monroe. He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan to the late Henry Roland and Jean (Plimmer) Black originally from Wellington, New Zealand. Ian graduated from Staples High School in Westport class of 1951 and the University of Bridgeport with a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering. Ian served in the U.S. Navy in the Experimental Guided Missile Submarine Group and was inducted into the Holland Club in 2005which recognizes "Qualified in Submarines" for more than 50 years. Ian was very active in his children's lives and was Cub master of Pack 261. Ian spent many years as a volunteer at the Merton House in Bridgeport, which was very close to his heart. He was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus Council # 5987 and a member of the Monroe Clergy. He was also a life member of the United States Submarine Veterans Groton Base. Those who love him and will always remember him include his wife of 43 years Lori Morrissey Black, whom he called the love of his life and his children and their spouses Mary and Kevin Gallagher of Trumbull, Christopher and Elizabeth (Warren) Black of Greenwich and Kevin and Ria (Treiber) Black of Wilton. The joy of his life were his eight grandchildren Caity, Jack and Kelly Gallagher, Sarah and Anna Black and Emily, Ryan and Andrew Black. Our family wishes to thank the parishioners of St. Jude, the Knights of Columbus and the Monroe Clergy for their outpouring of love and support. A special thanks to Father Skip Karcsinski and Deacon Dan Ianniello for their spiritual support and friendship. We also wish to thank the staff of the Infusion Unit and 7 East of St. Vincent's Medical Center, Dr. Robert Burd's office and VNS of CT Hospice all of whom gave Ian such loving care. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday August 1st at 10 a.m. in St. Jude Church 707 Monroe Turnpike Monroe for a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Msgr. John Peter Cullen. Interment with full Military Honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery Trumbull. Friends may greet the family on Monday from 4-7:30 p.m. in St. Jude's Church. Liturgy of the Hours will be celebrated on Monday at 7:30 p.m. by Ian's fellow Deacons. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Church or to Merton House. The Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
