Obituary

Herbert Warren Brelsford, resident at Wesley Village Cottages in Shelton (previously of Stratford) passed into the loving arms of Jesus Christ on Monday, August 2, after giving 95 years of love and devotion to his family and friends. Born in Stratford on April 7, 1915, he was the son of Henry and Annie Quire Brelsford. He initially worked as an oysterman on the Housatonic River for the Goodsell family business. He also learned the trade of carpentry as he worked for the Sabin and Bassett family businesses. He later built his own home, almost completely by himself. He also delivered ice, coal and oil with his brother, Henry, and their father. Their father then started Henry Brelsford & Sons Fuel Oil Co. Herb eventually owned the business including making deliveries himself until his retirement at age 75 in 1990.Herb was a rather quiet person in social situations unless it involved his true passion, music. He enjoyed playing the banjo, washboard, harmonica, kazoo, Jew's harp and organ. Herb had a wonderful New England-style sense of humor. He loved to vacation with his family in Maine and New Hampshire, a habit that rubbed off onto his children and grandchildren. A very special location, dear to his heart, was his brother Robert's cabin in Canaan, New Hampshire, which he helped construct. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy Coffin Brelsford, his brothers, Wilson, Henry, Robert, Sherman, Clinton and his sister, Lilyan Perrault. Herb is survived by his three devoted sons and their wives, Richard and Cathy of Stratford, Herbert and Joan of Milford, and Donald and Deborah of Stratford. He is also survived by eight cherished grandchildren, Susan of New Bedford, MA, Richard and his wife Rachel of New Canaan, Lori and her husband David Verzillo of Quaker Hill, Kimberly and Stephanie of Milford, and Michael, Daniel and Alyssa of Stratford. Also, his sister Ruth and her husband Fred Raymond of Stratford as well as sister-in-laws Nellie and Marge Brelsford of Stratford and Frances Brelsford of Milford. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. The Brelsford family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at St. Vincent's hospital and to Apex Health Services. They especially wish to thank Gloria Thomas, Herb's aid who, over Herb's final years, became a member of our family. They also wish to express special thanks to Beth Cairone, who was so caring and compassionate to Herb in his last hours and Beth Lajune for her special care. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 6 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Peace Church, 651 Stratford Road, Lordship. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Shelton. Calling hours are on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to any Parkinson's and/or Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease organizations of your choice.
