Helen Hritz Skirkanich, age 96,of Milford, beloved wife of the late John Skirkanich, passed away on January 29, 2018 in Milford Health Center. Helen was born on July 31, 1921 in Granville, New York, daughter of the late Nicholas and Helen (Filisko) Hritz and has been a long time area resident. Helen was a graduate of Granville High School, and in 1939 moved to Buffalo, NY to work on a Turret Lathe for the Houdalie Hershey Company. She was a life member of the Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist; where she was a member of the Seniors and past-secretary of the Mother's and Daughter's Club. Helen was also a member of the Milford Seniors, and was an avid bowler and member of the Milford Lanes. She enjoyed trips to the Casino's to play the slots. Helen loved gardening and working outdoors, especially raking leaves. Survivors include her devoted sons, Nicholas J. Skirkanich and his wife Jocelyn of Cheshire, and David E. Skirkanich of Milford, daughters-in-law, Geri Skirkanich and Kristine Skirkanich both of Florida, 7 grandchildren, Michael (Julie) Skirkanich, Kristen (Sean) Cassidy, Nicholas (Laura) Skirkanich, Jack (Alyssa) Skirkanich, Mark Skirkanich, Mathew Skirkanich, and Brett Skirkanich, 7 great-grandchildren, Jaclyn, Kaitlyn, Michael, Ian, Lily, Kaylee, and Rory, a sister, Madeline Bottone of Ansonia, sister-in-law, Mary Hritz of Stratford, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Helen was pre-deceased by her sons, John Peter Skirkanich and Michael Philip Skirkanich, daughter-in-law, Joyce Skirkanich, grandson, Erik Skirkanich, brothers, Michael and Joseph Hritz, and sisters, Mary Turner, Katherine Hritz, Margaret Zaniewski, and Julie Zatzick. Funeral Services will take place on Friday, February 2 nd at 10:15 am in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford, and at 11:00 a.m. in the Carpatho Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist, Bridgeport, for a Requiem Funeral Service. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery Stratford. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-7 pm. Panchida will be at 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make a donation in Helen's memory to St. John's Church.
