Helen Sedlar Rowland (89), of Easton, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Diane, in Washington DC on August 16. Born on June 30, 1922, in Flint, Michigan, she moved at age 9 to Easton, Connecticut, which remained her primary residence until her death. She is preceded in death by her parents, Peter Sedlar and Helen Kochiss Sedlar of Easton, and her husband of 54 years, Lawrence N. Rowland (Larry). She is survived by her devoted daughter, Diane Rowland, and her son-in-law, Brian Biles, of Washington DC. Known to her family and friends as Helenka, she was a compassionate and loving woman whose greatest joy in life was helping others. Using her skills as a bookkeeper, she worked at Bridgeport Brass Company during WWII and later assisted her husband at his business, Custom Kitchens of Fairfield. She served for many years as the Assistant Treasurer for the Town of Easton and helped her cousins and aunt and uncle manage Halzack's Country Store in Easton. A talented baker, she was known for her wedding cakes and pastries. One of her greatest honors was when "Helen's Home Bakery" made and delivered the birthday cake for Helen Keller. Above all, drawing on her Slovak heritage, she was devoted to her faith and her parish church, The Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist in Stratford, Connecticut. She loved her church community and participated fully in every aspect of the church a parishioner, as church treasurer, leader of the "Pagachi team", baker of hundreds of nut and poppyseed rolls for bake sales, trainer of altar servers and most importantly as an altar assistant to the priests. For her devotion and tireless commitment to her faith, she was honored by the late Metropolitan Nicholas of the American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese. In Washington, she continued her devotion at Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church in Potomac, Maryland. A Divine Liturgy and Requiem Funeral Service will be celebrated on Saturday August 20th at 9:00 a.m. in the Orthodox Greek Catholic Church of St John the Baptist 1240 Broadbridge Avenue Stratford. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery Stratford. Friends may greet her family on Friday from 4-7 p.m. in the church. A Parastas Service will be at 6:30 p.m In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helen's memory to St John the Baptist Orthodox Church at 1240 Broadbridge Avenue, Stratford, Connecticut.
