- Beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend Helen S. Butchko entered into eternal life on Friday October 21, 2005 at Bridgeport hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Bridgeport, she was the eldest daughter of Anne Sedlak and the late Stephen Sedlak, and was a longtime Trumbull resident. A graduate of Warren Harding High School and the University of Bridgeport, Helen devoted her life to helping others as a registered nurse in the medical practices of several area physicians, most recently Dr's G. William Hulcher and Guido Napolitano, where she worked prior to her retirement in 1998. A longtime communicant of the Carpatho Russian Orthodox Church of Saint John the Baptist, Helen served St. John's as a former President of the Mother's and Daughter's Club, a church financial auditor, and a singer in the Senior and Pan Orthodox choirs. She was also actively involved with the Trumbull Senior Center, where she enjoyed practicing Tai Chi and creating beautiful works of ceramics and stained glass with her many friends. There's only one phrase that can adequately describe Helen and her life: and angel sent by God to do good works on his behalf. She was deeply devoted to her family and friends, always willing to help those in need, comfort and cheer those in times of difficulty, and face her own challenges with grace, strength, and dignity. The illness that ultimately cut short her life was an unrelenting and aggressive one, against which she ultimately could never prevail-but neither she, nor her family and friends that loved her so dearly ever gave up hope. Beloved survivors include her mother Anne Sedlak of Bridgeport; two sons Steven A. Butchko and his wife Janet of Stratford, and John A. Butchko, of Trumbull; a brother, James Sedlak, of Bedminster, NJ, and a sister, Sally Sedlak Rappoport of Milford. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband of 31 years, Alexander J. Butchko. The Butchko Family would like to gratefully recognize and thank the caring, devoted staff of the Norma Pfreim Cancer Center at Bridgeport Hospital for all their kindness, professionalism, and tireless efforts on Helen's behalf. Heartfelt thanks are also extended to her devoted team of physicians: Dr. David H. Witt; G. William Hulcher, and Dr. Guido Napolitano. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday October 26th at 9:15 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford and at 10 a.m. in the Carpatho Russian Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist for a Requiem Funeral Service. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery Stratford. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. Panachida Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers those desiring may make donations to the American Cancer Society or to St. John's Church.
