Obituary

George Mihai, age 92, of Hamden, beloved husband of Dorothy Bayusik Mihai, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the nursing home, Laurel Woods, East Haven. George was a WWII Veteran of the U.S. Navy as a "Seabee", and was retired from the City of Bridgeport Department of Public Works as a Public Weighmaster.

George was born in Exeter, Pennsylvania to the late Michael and Elizabeth (Hudacky) Mihai. In Exeter he found the passion of his life, Golf. He became the captain of the high school golf team and caddied for Jack Grout, the teacher of Arnold Palmer. After graduation, he entered the military and became a Seabee. His company assisted in supplying the D-Day initiative. After the war, George moved to Bridgeport, CT. and met his wife Dorothy and raised a family. George was hired by the Singer Sewing Machine Company and became an expert in sewing machine repair as well as an accomplished embroiderer. He embroidered the jackets for numerous companies, school sports, and motorcycle clubs as well as for the crew of Paul Newman's movie "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in the-Moon Marigolds" in 1972. He was also an artist and painted in oil. One of his paintings "Eternal Light" was inspired after the assassination of JFK. It depicts a stormy sky over the Stratford Light house with an image of JFK. The painting was acknowledged by the Kennedy family.

George was a long time Bridgeport resident, and a member of the VFW and DAV before moving to Portage, Pa. to open a bakery and embroidery shop. The bakery and his cake decorating skills were renowned in the area. George and Dorothy later moved to Saco, Maine for 25 years where he became licensed again as a Public Weighmaster for MERC, an energy plant. He was a member of the Biddeford-Saco Country Club. Golfing continued to be his passion and was one of the champion senior golfers at the club. One highlight was meeting and golfing with Chi Chi Rodriquez.
