Eleanor O'Connell, 92, of Stratford, passed away on May 25, 2024.  Eleanor was born at St. Vincent's Medical Center on March 20, 1932.  She was predeceased by her parents, John and Dorothy O'Connell, a sister, Dorothy Ann, and a brother, Edward O'Connell.  She is survived by her brothers Jack O'Connell (Stratford) and James O'Connell (Oxford), along with 7 nieces and nephews and 21 great-nieces and nephews.

Eleanor lived in Stratford since 1956 and was a member of St. James Church.  Eleanor graduated from Lauralton Hall in 1949 and from St. Vincent's School of Nursing in 1952.  Eleanor was a nurse at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport for 42 years, retiring in 1994.  Eleanor was the supervisor of the Orthopedic Unit and was voted by the American Journal of Nurses as one of the nation's "Great Head Nurses", where her commendation cited her as "a skilled manager and exceptionally caring individual".

Eleanor had a remarkable memory, a sharp wit, and was an excellent listener.  Eleanor was calm, generous, loving, and kind, and always put the needs of others in front of her own.  She was very dedicated to her faith.  Eleanor loved family gatherings and maintained a wide circle of friends and former colleagues.

Visitation will be at the Adzima Funeral Home, 50 Paradise Green Place, Stratford,  on Thursday, June 6 from 9:00 am -10:00 am, followed by a funeral Mass at St. James Church in Stratford at 10:30 am.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to St. James Church in Stratford.
