Arthur William Derbyshire, 94, of Stratford, CT died peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2017 at Griffin Hospital surrounded by family. He was born in Bridgeport, CT, the son of Ellsworth Lawrence Derbyshire and Mary Godbout Derbyshire. He graduated from Sacred Heart School and Bassick High School. He enlisted in the Army Air Force and was a WWII Veteran serving in the 15 th Air Force Bombardment Squadron stationed in North Africa and Italy. Art entered the Quality Field as an in-process inspector at AVCO and embarked on studies leading to a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Bridgeport Engineering Institute. He was promoted to Quality Engineer at AVCO. Art subsequently took the position of Senior Quality Engineer at Hubbell, Inc. and at the time of his retirement had the responsibility of Quality Manager. He was a senior member of ASQ and a Certified Quality Engineer. He served the Southern CT Section in various committee chairs and served as Chairman of the Section. Art served as the Southern CT Section Council Rep for many years and became Chairman from 1985 to 1987. The NEQC awarded him the R. Shaw Goldthwait Award in 1986. This award is given to someone who has made significant contributions to the quality profession in the Northeast. His service to the Council and Section were continuous for thirty years, as well as attendance at both the Annual Quality Congress and NEQC Conferences. Art developed the original Inspection Course for the Southern CT Section and taught it for many years. He acted in the capacity as the Quality Member of a committee of professionals for Housatonic Community College. He served as one of the two original examiners for the Connecticut Quality Improvement Award founded in 1987 for three years. This was the first state quality award in the United States and was based on the Malcolm Baldridge Award. Art served for three years as Quality Supervisor for Junior Achievement. He also served for five years as a committee member of the St. James Boy Scout Troop 75. Art also taught Driver's Education for AARP for ten years and was a life member of the VFW. He was elected and served on the Planning & Zoning Commission of Stratford and was a member of the 6 th District Republican Club and was also a Justice of the Peace. Art was a communicant at St. Marks Church and devoted one hour each week to Eucharistic adoration. He was a 4 th Degree Knight of Columbus, John Paul II. Art also took part in Bible Study at St Mark's Church. Art loved to bowl and was also an avid pinochle player. Survivors include his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Eleanor Derbyshire and his sons, James W. Derbyshire of Danbury; Paul M. Derbyshire of Franklin, MA; Thomas A. Derbyshire and wife Ally of Stratford; Andrew M. Derbyshire and wife Eva of Ansonia; Glenn A. Derbyshire of Naugatuck; and George W. Derbyshire and wife Michele of Ansonia. Survivors also include the following Grandchildren: Kristen Derbyshire, Michael Derbyshire, Emily Derbyshire, Adam Derbyshire and John Derbyshire, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Art was pre-deceased by his sisters, Mary Sura, Catherine Mandeville, and Dorothy Mandeville. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, December 2 nd at 9 a.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford, and at 10 a.m. in St. Mark's Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford for a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will full military honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Trumbull. Friends may call on Friday from 4-7 p.m.
