Ann Pekar Janis, age 93, died on Friday, November 11, 2005 in Tucson, Arizona, where she had resided for the past 27 years. She was born in Bridgeport on December 23, 1911, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Lacko Pekar. Ann married Stanley J. Janis in June, 1937. The couple resided in Fairfield and Redding until moving to Tucson in September 1978. At the time of Stanley's death in Tucson on April 5, 1990, they had been married for 53 years. Both felt fortunate to have traveled by auto in 42 of the continental United States. They especially loved the natural wonders of the West and Southwest. Ann attended Fairfield schools and Butler Business School and was employed as a cashier at the former D.M. Read department store in Bridgeport. After her marriage, she owned and operated the Hi-Way Cleaners, a dry cleaning establishment on Kings Highway, Fairfield. While living in Redding, Ann worked at the Museum of Art, Science and Industry in Bridgeport. Ann was especially proud of her many nieces and nephews who fondly recall her holiday visits to their homes and the annual roasts that she and Stanley held in Redding each summer. Although severe arthritis in later years deterred her from her favorite pastimes of sewing, cooking and traveling, Ann continued to take pride in her appearance, to read daily, to enjoy lunches and being with friends and to be a caring companion to her fellow residents at Catalina Haven Assisted Living where she resided since December 2003 and where she passed away among her friends and Hospice Caregivers. Ann is survived by a sister Barbara McLeod of New Canaan and two brothers George Pekar and John Pekar and his wife Jeanne all of Fairfield and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased by a sister Mary Gabrys and four brothers two named Joseph and Nicholas Pekar Sr. of Stratford and Stephen Pekar of Fairfield. Ann was a faithful parishioner of St Catalina Parish Church in Tucson, where she was a strong supporter of St Vincent De Paul Society. Friends and relatives are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in St Aloysius Church on Cherry Street, New Canaan, on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. Private burial is being arranged by the Adzima Funeral Home to take place at a later date at St John's Cemetery, Stratford. Those desiring may make contributions in Ann's memory to any Hospice program or a charity of one's choice.
