Obituary

Anita M. (Pronovost) Tomasco, 84, beloved wife of 63 years to Matthew A. Tomasco, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2018 at the Lord Chamberlain Nursing Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Bridgeport in March 1934, Anita was the daughter of the late Leon and Josephine Pronovost. She was very proud of her French-Canadian heritage. In the 1940s, Anita's family moved to Huntington Road in Stratford where she met the love of her life, Matthew. Initially childhood friends, they became high school sweethearts at Stratford High and were married in 1955. They raised their own family in the same house where Anita had grown up. Matt, a master carpenter, made many improvements and additions to their home over the years. After working as a secretary for several years following high school, Anita left her job to raise her two sons, David and Allan. Once they became teenagers, Anita was able to pursue her dream of going to college and becoming a teacher.   She received her bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Bridgeport and her sixth-year certificate from St. Joseph's College. Anita had a distinguished career in the Stratford public school system, teaching at Eli Whitney, Lordship, and Chapel Street elementary Schools, and then becoming a reading specialist at Flood Middle School. She retired in 1999 but remained committed to her profession, serving as the Treasurer for the Greater Bridgeport Retired Teachers' Association and its retirement fund for many years. She also inspired her five grandchildren to love learning and to pursue higher education. Anita was a long-standing and active parishioner of St. Mark's Catholic Church in Stratford. Over the years, she performed in the church musicals ("The Sound of Music" was her favorite), sang in the choir, served in the Ladies' Guild, and assisted in running the annual church bazaar.   She also was a religious education teacher at St. Mark's school and on the liturgical committee. Anita and Matt were avid travelers; over the past few decades they went on numerous tours and cruises, exploring not only the United States but also Canada, Europe, and South America. In addition to her husband Matt, Anita is survived by her son David Tomasco and his wife Nancy of Milford, CT; her son Allan Tomasco and his wife Jean of Southington, CT; and her beloved grandchildren, Stephen, Katherine, Elizabeth, Brian, and Sarah Tomasco. She also leaves behind her sisters Doris Dritenbas of Vero Beach, FL, and Yvette Mickolyzck of Milford, CT, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Raymond, who died in childhood but who was forever in her heart. The family extends their appreciation to Jeanne DiMuzio and the staff at Atria Stratford who made Anita's last few years so enjoyable, and to the caregivers at Lord Chamberlain who were so kind to her in her final days. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 11 th at 10 a.m. meeting directly in St. Mark Church 500 Wigwam Lane Stratford. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Stratford. Friends may greet her family on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. in the Adzima Funeral Home 50 Paradise Green Place Stratford. In lieu of flowers, donations in Anita's memory can be made to the Stratford Library, 2203 Main St. Stratford CT, 06615; http://stratfordlibrary.org/ . or to the Greater Bridgeport Teacher's Association Scholarship Fund, through the funeral home.
