Abigail (Gail) Bennett Fedorko, 85 of Stratford died Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Lord Chamberlain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Stratford CT. For 52 years she was the beloved wife of the late William Fedorko. She was daughter of the late Edward and Eva Carter and sister of the late Harriett Carter and Frances Swenson. She is survived by her two sons William of New Fairfield Ct. and David of Stratford. She had two granddaughters, Emily by her son William and Corey by her son David. She is further survived by; her sister in-law Wilma Fedorko, nieces Karen Swenson McManus and Karla Marshall and husband Scott, a nephew Peter Fedorko and his wife Barbara as well as a niece Wilma Shoop and her husband Randy. Last but not least she is survived by her faithful and beloved canine companion Crystal.Born and raised in Milford MA, Gail was a graduate of Milford High School in 1941. Embarking on what was to be a life's work of caring for others she attended Burbank Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. Now as a registered nurse, after the war, she joined the Boston Visiting Nurse Association. From 1947 to 1950 she worked in the Roxbury VNA Office and her duties included the delivering of babies in the comfort of their mothers own homes. She was rewarded for her outstanding work by receiving a one year scholarship to Columbia University from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Following that Gail worked at The New Rochelle State House for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Amherst Health Department. There she setup and coordinated a program that reorganized the Health Department Nursing Program. From 1952-1954 she worked for the Woodbridge (CT) Health Department in a combined program of Visiting Nursing and School nursing. While raising her children Gail was very active in the Unitarian Universalist Church (Stratford), the PTA at Chapel School as well as being active in political and community life of Stratford. Returning to work in 1972, she was a public health nurse for the City of Bridgeport until she retired in1986. Her principle duties included being the school nurse at Columbus Elementary School, working at the Columbus Well Child Clinic and making home visits to all newborns and their families in her district.In her later years photography became a major interest and she was a member of the Pequonnock Camera Club. She earned recognition for her photos in competitions of the New England Camera club. She and her late husband were also avid world travelers using photography to document their many travels. Highlights of their travels included being among the first to visit China after it opened its borders to the US. Another was having the good fortune to meet Mother Theresa on the street while visiting India, engaging her in conversation and being given a tour of her hospital. She was very active in the Friends of Booth Park organization in Stratford, volunteering to lead park tours and do demonstrations. She and her late husband were also very involved in the restoration of the Putney Chapel at Booth Park. During her retirement she continued her volunteer work for the Red Cross by providing her services for Blood Drives.Her life at home, at work and in her community was dedicated to making a positive difference for those in her care. Interment will be private and a memorial service will be held a later date. A notice will be published here when memorial plans are finalized.
